Block #10 “Christmas Lantern” is brought to you by the talented Diane Lomax of cwilt Fabrics and Haberdashery where you will find her complete block pattern and tutorial.

This is a pieced block with appliqué.
My Tips:
You will be cutting your lantern and background pieces from the paper templates; like using a sewing pattern.
There are several pieces to the lantern and background that are cut with a diagonal edge. To be sure they are oriented in the correct direction when attaching to the body of the lantern, I used my cut pattern pieces as a guide.
The lantern top and bottom are made with the “stitch and flip” technique that we just did in Bobbi’s Rudolph Block #9 and also in Sherry’s Snowman Block #5.
Have fun with your appliqué and embellishments!
I used raw edge appliqué for the leaves but practiced machine blanket stitching on the bow. I see progress!
I just love the word haberdashery. In the old days a haberdasher sold sewing notions (UK definition.) Diane’s lantern seems like old days when lanterns were lit by oil and hung in the doorway for visitors, a warm glow through the winter frosted panes.
Our I Wish You a Merry QAL is rounding the corner towards the end. Say it ain’t so! But it is so rewarding to see everyone’s beautiful blocks shaping into a beautiful quilt.
Be sure to visit all the hostesses blogs, to read their tips and to see their finished block in a variety of color and fabric inspirations!

What a great block! Every Friday after Thanksgiving, my mom would have us set up a big table in the living room. She would set up her Christmas village, which grew with each passing year. Lanterns were always included in this village.
You did a great job on your block. Thanks for the hints.
I’ll start on mine as soon as I return from Arkansas.

Great looking block and good tip on orienting the lantern sides. I must admit that I had to resew those a couple of times.

Thanks Karen! Somedays seam ripping and resewing seems like part of the quilting process 😋

Thanks so much Bobbi! We have a holly bush in the yard that has dark leaves, with newer leaf sprouts that are lighter.
