Fall Into a QAL Block 8 Release!

Block 8 of the Fall Into a QAL “Autumn Leaf” is designed Jennifer Fulton of The Inquiring Quilter where you can read her tutorial and download the free pattern!

This is a paper pieced block that Jennifer has written in two versions; New Beginner and Confident Beginner. Thank you Jennifer, as I am definitely a newbie paper piecer!

Jennifer is an experienced paper piecer who knows how to guide you well. Her blog has all the info and accompanying photographs you will need to succeed in making your Autumn leaf.

If you are new to paper piecing, I encourage you take the plunge and make this pretty block. When you are finished, it is such a satisfying feeling to say “Yea! I can paper piece now too!”

I made my block in homage to my favorite fall leaves, the ones that have orange, red and still some of their pretty greens. I’m excited to see all the fabric colors and patterns everyone chooses to make this cheerful block! 🍁

* To keep the contest portion of the QAL fair and fun for everyone, the prize will be randomly awarded to one person who completed the designer’s block pattern. We encourage you to make each block your own, however a substitution will not gain entry. The deadline for entry is Monday 9/3/18 at 11:59 EDT.  We would love you to post your photos on all our formats, but entry is limited to one per person per block. You must be 18 years or older to enter. *

  1. Thank you for showing how great the simple one is. I really do NOT like paper piecing, so I’m going to do the simple one, but I was feeling very out in the cold until I saw your block. =)

  3. Hi Abbie! Your blocks are coming together really nicely, and you made excellent choices on your fabrics! That is often the most difficult part, especially when it is a mystery QAL. I haven’t paper pieced anything for years, so I think I would definitely do the easier one. I will check out her tutorial – thanks for sharing the link. ~smile~ Roseanne

  11. Love your work!! I’m very new to paper piecing. I struggled in the beginning but then I did a class at my local sewing shop. Six weeks. We did Sassafras Designs’ Cadence Court. Being in a class setting consistently with the ability to do one set at class and another exact set at home set the skill in my head FINALLY!! I’ll be following your progress!

      I looked up Cadence Court, wow! It is beautiful and so intricate. I’m impressed! Taking a class helps you learn so much and stay focused on finishing. I wish I had more available around me to take. Youtube video’s are my substitute.
      It’s so nice to hear from you, I love meeting new quilt bloggers. I’ll be following your projects too.

  12. Abbie, the color palette is stunning and the block is beautiful. The suite of blocks look beautiful together and it is interesting to hear you say that working with a limited solid palette had you spend less time on picking fabric – the blocks are amazingly balanced. I might need to try that as picking fabric is so hard for me. I also would not have known you are a newbie paper piecer!

      I have a hard time too as you know! Limiting a quilt fabric/color palette definitely has its pros as well as cons.
      Pros we agree saves decision time, con is I sometimes wanted to make some of these QAL blocks more diverse. A learning experience as always! I’m happy with how it is all coming together.
      Jennifer’s beginner Leaf is a great pattern to get started paper piecing.
