Modern Matisse inspired quilt

My mother loves the artist Henri Matisse. She especially loves his cut-out pieces. She said to me that if I ever wanted to make her a quilt, she would like one a made of bright bandannas to compliment the Matisse posters she has.

Last January I started participating in Patterns by Jen’s #2018MonthlyColorChallenge. Each month a block is made using fabrics of a only specific color. I decided I would use these blocks to make a quilt for my mother, instead of bandannas.

Here are the ones I completed and posted on IG sparkleonwithabbie.

I did miss a few months, so to fill in the blanks I made a few more to reach twelve blocks, some repeating the color scheme from the challenge.

 

I found the background fabric I will use, Background fabric Moda Grunge “Seeing Stars” cream. I really like how it looks with each block.

I’m working on a layout to make a full size bed quilt. I have until Christmas to complete it!

While planning this quilt, it was interesting to learn that Matisse transitioned from painting to cut collages later in his life.

A battle with cancer in the 1940s left artist Henri Matisse confined to a wheelchair. His poor health has prevented him from painting, but didn’t stop him from creating art. He began as he described it, “painting with scissors,” cutting shapes out of paper freehand and gluing them to paper, canvas and board.

I love art because of my mother. When I look at a painting I love, it is like stepping into a whole new world yet a word you feel like you’ve always known. Ah, there I go getting philosophical!

I have so many “favorite” artists in all different mediums. That will have to be another post! But now I’m wondering who your favorite artist is/are?

  2. Abbie — this quilt is going to be beautiful! I love the colors you have chosen. I was never really in to art until I had the chance to go to Paris. There, I found myself lost in the Louvre for hours and hours (well, a couple of days if truth be told). Now I find that I spend time really looking at art and letting it speak to me. Anyway, my current favorite artist is a guy who lives in this area. To me, his landscapes perfectly capture my mystical magical place in the world.

      I was lucky enough to visit the Louvre too, many years ago. I still picture myself in an awe induced entrancement. I know exactly what you mean, some artwork just speaks to you.
      Thank you for sharing Jay Pullman with me. His paintings speak to me too. It’s hard to put into words the feelings you get when looking at his beautiful colors and scenes. It’s like he can capture a single fleeting perfect moment in time. Thanks again for opening my eyes to something new.

  3. Hi Abbie! This is going to be a fabulous quilt for your mom. I love seeing all the different blocks you made, too, in the slide show. That orange on orange block is really cool, and I love the red one too. I can’t wait to see how this comes together. It looks like it will go well with the Open Window print for sure.     1. Hi Roseanne, thank you! I started making the blocks strictly by one color and that was the
      goal until I had to improvise for some when I didn’t have enough variations of one color in
      my stash!
      I love Monet! So relaxing to look at his paintings 😊

  5. Great quilt! I love the inspiration for this quilt. This year, one of my goals is to make a bright, colorful, different type quilt. I have so many favorite artists…Seurot, Matisse, Monet, O’Keefe…I am sort of all over the place with my favorites. Have fun putting this quilt together. I am looking forward to seeing it.
    (The fabric for the backing is perfect!)

  11. I like Matisse, but maybe prefer Monet slightly. A tour of his work came to the Phoenix Art museum one year and I spent all fall preparing my students for it – had a retired art teacher come in every week and do a Monet-like project with them, while our school art teacher was also doing some. They were ready for the exhibit and impressed the docents with their knowledge of his life and techniques. That wasn’t what I was going for, but it gave them a nice boost of confidence – I taught in a low income neighborhood with a lot of immigrants, and I was happy to have people see they were so capable! Art is a way into knowledge for many children. You learned your lessons well from your mother and I KNOW she loved this quilt.
