“Sew, Let’s Quilt Along” Finale!

#sewletsqal

This is the final post for the Sew Let’s Quilt Along!

Included are my small project ideas and all the info to enter your chance in our awesome Grand Prize package!!! Thank you everyone who quilted and followed along during this QAL. It’s been a pleasure collaborating with all the Partners in Design and seeing the enthusiasm of the participants as they made each block.

Segment 3 Small Project

I made a wall hanging/mini quilt with the four blocks from Segment 3; Buttons, By the Bolt, Rotary Cutter and Who’s Got the Thimble. I printed the QAL logo onto fabric to use as the center piece.

When drawing out a layout on graph paper for this piece, I used the finished block size 12” x 12.” This size is much easier to work with than let’s say 11 ¾” or 11 5/8″ finished, which some of my blocks ended up being!  For anyone who had blocks not exactly at 12½” x 12½” this method may help you too!

I trimmed each block to 12” square and added a thin white border around them to make them 12 ½” square. I think it offsets the blocks nicely as well.

Cutting requirements:

Four QAL blocks at 12” square

Block Borders:

(8) at ¾” x 12”

(8) at ¾” x 12 ½”

Background Pieces:

(2) at 4 ½” x 12 ½”

(2) at 6 ½” x 8 ½”

Center Piece: 4 ½” x 8 ½”

Center Piece borders:

Inside: (2) at 2 ½” x 4 ½”

(2) at 2 ½” x 8 ½”

Outside (2) at 2 ½” x 8 ½”

Quilt piece border:

(2) at 2 ½” x 32 ½”

(2) at 2 ½” x 36 ½”

*Sew with ¼” seams

Finished size: 36” x 36”

I completed one of my Segment 2 projects after the post. My mother was visiting me and admiring all the designer’s quilt blocks that I had made thus far. With Karen’s Iron Block, she loved the rick rack detail and said “look there is even steam coming out!” She thought it would make a perfect potholder, so that is what I made!

I trimmed this block the down to 11” square and made a quilt sandwich using The Warm Company Insul-Bright Mylar/Poly Batting in the middle.  This potholder is not only functional but also a pretty decorative addition to the kitchen.

I used what I think of as a classic potholder quilt pattern, crisscross straight lines 1 1/2″ apart. Did you notice that one of my lines is way off?! I did too after seeing the picture and will be fixing that little booboo. ;)

To bind the potholder I found a perfect tutorial from Make It & Love It. It uses a bias binding with directions for a loop for hanging.
