Barn Quilt BOM Month 1

Hello! And welcome to Month One of the Barn Quilt BOM from Sherry Shish of Powered by Quilting.

August tasks for the start of the BOM included downloading and printing the coloring sheets for the quilt and/or the three minis to help you decide what color fabrics to use and where. This is also a great way to familiarize yourself with the overall construction of both.

Last month I posted my fabric selections from the collection “Daydreams” by Kate Spain with the  Bella solid “Ash” for the background; both are from Moda Fabrics. I will be making the entire quilt.

For September, the block of the month is this:

The plan is to make 16 of this block this month that will be repeated throughout the quilt a total of 16 times.

I made one block in its entirety first to get a feel of how it goes together, then for the remaining I chained pieced away!

Chain piecing is your friend for these blocks! Chain piecing is a technique to sew your same set pieces continuously in an assembly fashion without having to stop, lift the needle, cut the thread and them start again with a new set.  Just keep feeding the next piece before the last one is almost off from under your machine foot. You can use it throughout the construction of this block. It really is a time saver.

A new trend: Chain pieced decor?!

I never thought I would be so excited about practicing and mastering ¼” seams as I have been making this quilt. This is something I struggle in being consistent with. Just the repetition of sewing repeat pieces is a great way to build this skill.

I’ve been experimenting with ideas and have found that taping this index card on my machine in line with along my ¼” foot is a perfect guide.

And it is really worth the extra time to trim your half square triangles (HST) to 2 ½” square. When I first started quilting, I just snipped off the dog ears and hoped for the best. Not the best idea at all!

The pattern for this BOM was designed by Sherry and is available for purchase for $20.00 by clicking below:

Sherry’s pattern is a confident beginner level with help through the entire process!  What I love about this pattern is it guides you step by step, no guess work at all.
