Holiday Gifts to You! Small Tote Bag pattern

Hi and welcome to my stop and the last day of the Partners in Design 2019 Holiday Gifts to You blog hop!  I wrote a pattern for a simple little 8″ x 10″ lined tote bag with boxed corners.

I know there are oodles of tote bag patterns out there but I think you will find mine concise and easy to follow. It is perfect to print for future project ideas too. Click below to download the free pattern!

I love all sizes of totes! Smaller ones are perfect for giving gifts in on any occasion. I also have several I’ve made and have kept for myself. They are perfect to use for craft and sewing projects; keeping supplies at hand.  For this project I had a tote near me full of webbing styles and colors I could chose from to make my test totes for this pattern.

Once you have mastered this easy technique of creating a lined tote with boxed corners, it is simple to adjust it to different sizes. I made some teeny tiny ones to keep my Christmas buttons in for the season. Buttons are a perfect embellishment to any tote too!

And a bonus is this tote is reversible! No raw seems show either way. totebag.reversed

Each day of this hop one designer offered a simple free pattern (through the end of the hop, today!) to thank everyone who participated in our last three QAL’s, follows and supports us or who just likes to quilt! Each pattern is perfect for a holiday gift to give, keep or to make anytime of the year.

  1. Thank you for the pattern…one can never have too many totes or tote patterns. Yous does seem very straightforward and I am looking forward to trying it. Happy holidays.

    1. Sure! When I checked the tote again, it actually measures 4″ x 4 1/2″. Thank you for bringing that to my attention, I will update my blog photo.
So for that size, I cut the four fabric pieces at 4 1/2″ (width) by 5″ (length) and cut a 1″ square out for bottom corners. I did not use interfacing. Due to small size, I don’t think it is necessary. For the handles I used 1/2″ wide cotton ribbon. I cut each piece 7″ and  placed approximately 1 1/4″ in from the outside seams. When sewing raw edges together, leave an opening of at least 1″ between the handle on one side to turn right side out. Other than that, follow the pattern.
Feel free to email me with any questions.
      Thanks for visiting!
