“QAL By the Sea” Block 9 Release!

We are sailing into the Segment 3 of the QAL By the Sea with Block 9 “setting Sail” by Karen Thurn of Tu-N Quilts, Travels and Eats. Visit her blog to download the free pattern and read the tutorial.

Here is my finished version.

“Setting Sail” a 12″ x 12″ block designed by Karen Thurn

This is a pleasurable block to make. It may seem a lot at first but Karen breaks it down into easy steps. It is so fun to make the 3-D sails and adding all the details; from the flag to the rigging lines to her signature Rick Rack embellishments!

Tips

  • After you turn your sails right side out, gently poke the corners from the inside…I use a fat knitting needle.
  • Be careful of your iron around ribbon/RickRack….I’ve learned the hard way by melting polyesters!
  • Take your time and have fun!

For this quilt I am using HITS the SPOT and seeing stars Grunge fabric from Moda and coordinating Kona solids that I have in my stash.

To see this block in a variety of different colors and fabrics as well as get tips for construction, please visit the other QAL hosts:
