Welcome to the release of Block 3 of the Destination: Quilt Along. “Fair in Square” is a pattern written and designed by me, Abbie Danahy here at Sparkle On!

This is a block with a single piece background with applique and three dimensional pennant banners.

The idea for my block came from a photo I took at the Bloomsburg Fair in Pennsylvania. Last summer I really missed going to fairs and festivals. Some are returning this summer but it’s nice to have one preserved in our travel themed quilt!

With any applique block, I always check to see if my background fabrics show through the applique pieces. A darker or print background may show through lighter colored appliqued pieces. You can always add a piece of light fusible interfacing to the lighter pieces before adhering the applique fusible.

Cut out the two windows in the truck after you after ironed on the adhesive paper. Gently fold the piece at the center of each window and cut an opening. Then it will be easier to trim out the inside.

I arranged the shapes and adhered all three at the same time.

Embroider the edges as desired to secure them; with raw-edge, zigzag or satin stitch to name a few.

I recommend that you applique and embroider the ice cream cone truck shapes before adding the pennant banners.

You will be making binding tape to hold the pennants. The pattern has complete instructions for this technique. I used three different fabrics for the pennants but you can use all the same or any kind of combination you like! Remember to pick one to leave out as you will be making nine but only using eight.

If you have any questions about making this block, please don’t hesitate to contact me by leaving a comment here or emailing me at sparkilyblog@gmail.com. You can also join the our Partners in Design Facebook group to talk with the designers and participants of this QAL.
