Block 9 of the Fall Into a QAL “Postage Stamp Turkey” is designed by Karen Thurn of Tu-Na Quilts, Travels, and Eats where you can view her tutorial and download the free pattern!
This is a pieced block with sixty-four 2” squares (your postage stamps!) sewn together. Thirty-seven of these are Half Square Triangles (HST.)
This block requires some extra time and patience but you will be rewarded with a block that you will be so proud! I am actually in love with my turkey. 😉
Tom, my turkey, has two gradations of brown. I’m using Kona solids and thought all my stash was “Coffee” but it appears some “Espresso” found its way in too. Or perhaps a dye lot variation? Well, luckily Tom likes his beverages and says it gives his body feathers a nice look.
My tips for this block include; Reading the entire pattern through first. Then using the checklists Karen provides in her pattern to keep your pieces organized.
I spy a turkey face! Such fun!
Lay out all your “stamps” and then begin sewing row by row. Karen’s pattern provides precise pressing directions.
I added a sequin and bead eye to finish complete my Tom!
I’m happy to report that my Tom is a recipient of the annual Presidential Thanksgiving Turkey Pardon. He will continue to reside with me year round! 🦃

Your turkey looks great! I think the two colors of brown add a nice depth to the design. Well done!

Hi Abbie! Your turkey is so darn cute. Mr. Tom actually looks very much like a turkey, and he certainly deserves that pardon. ~smile~ Roseanne

I think this Tu-Na design is just incredible and Mr Tom definitely does it justice. I hadn’t noticed the two shades of brown until you mentioned it but I think it works really well. A happy accident!
