The I Wish You a Merry Christmas Quilt-A-Long has begun! So exciting!
I am so pleased to introduce the first block designer, the talented Vanda of Quilt in Piece where you will find her complete Snowflake block tutorial.
This block was so fun to make. It was like putting together a puzzle and then “Eureka! I got it!”
Once you are ready to make your block, here are some tips from me for making it:
I centered the larger crystals on the crease lines and then fit in the smaller ones. You can arrange it the other way around too (smaller crystals on the crease lines.)
I used “Heat n Bond Lite” iron-on adhesive and actually remembered to peel the backing off the pieces first, then I arrange the pieces on the background fabric (with the exception of the center smaller inner circle.) When I had it to my liking I hit it with the iron, starting in the middle to secure all the pieces then working outward. Then I iron pressed the last piece (smaller center circle) in place. I think this block is simply elegant!
I raw edge appliqued around the crystal pieces as close as possible to their edge. Once the quilt is assembled, I was thinking I would do some echo quilting around the snowflake on the white background.

The first snow of winter is still magical to me; a special treat is when the snow is light and the flakes are large. Growing up in Pennsylvania, I remember “catching” a flake on my mitten and wondering at its design as it melted away. A little gift that comes and goes on your finger tip.
Please do let me know if you made this block and feel free to ask me any questions about constructing it.
❄️ Have fun! Your snowflake is sure to sparkle! ❄️

It looks pretty with the color on top instead of as background, too!
