#fallintoaqal Block #1
“Hedgehog” by Vanda Chittenden

My process and tips:

This is an appliqued block. I used “Heat-n-Bond Lite” to fuse the pieces.

After I traced the shapes on the adhesive paper, I cut out the middle of the larger head and body pieces before pressing them to the fabric. This reduces stiffness in your block and if you choose to quilt it, makes it easier on your needle.

I labeled the feet and ears…

The feet and ears go just under the body and head so be sure to position these pieces as you like before pressing.

Vanda uses the raw edge appliqué technique to stitch down and secure the pieces. Simply straight stitch around each piece just inside of the edge. This will result in some edge fraying which gives a whimsical and textured look, perfect for a Hedgehog!

🍁 Autumn is the time when hedgehogs prepare for hibernation. These rotund spiky critters get plumper still in preparation for the winter months. And like their groundhog friends here in Pennsylvania, they then bid us adieu until Spring!  🦔

  1. Abbie, this little critter is totally adorable! This looks like a fun quilt along. Thanks for the tips on fabric choices, it’s helpful to have some ideas in mind before starting. I’m thinking this cutie pie needs a name, I’ll be thinking about this today!

Yes, a name is needed! Others have been coming up with some “H” names. My BF said he should be called “Sonic” 😉

  2. Hi Abbie,
I can’t believe it is time for this QAL already! This little hedgehog is so cute – I’ll have to pop over to see if he has a name. Harvey the hedgehog I’m calling him in my mind until I hear otherwise. ~smile~ Roseanne

  3. Hi Abbie — love your version of the hedgehog — he’s so cute! I also trim my fusible adhesive it really does reduce the bulk. I do a lot of machine applique for the items I sell on Etsy. The QAL is off to a great start!
