Today is the release of the first block of twelve in the Destination: Quilt Along!
Block 1, Grand Canyon, is designed by Sandy Maxfield. You can download the pattern for free during the duration of the QAL by visiting her blog SandyStar Designs.
The Grand Canyon is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World! Sandy artistically captures the essence of the river carved rock layers.
My tips when making this block of many pieces is stay organized! You can label your pieces by size. I laid out the entire block by piece before I began sewing. I then labeled each row to keep them in order.
Chain piecing will make sewing the Half Square Triangles faster. Be sure to trim your HST’s to the exact size of 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ square.
Make sure your 1/4″ seams are consistent.
I turned the sun into a moon (I haven’t appliqued it yet.)
Take your time and enjoy making your block!

About the QAL: This travel destination themed QAL will have twelve 12″ x 12″ (finished) mystery blocks. Patterns are provided by each block designer free during the duration of the QAL. There will be 3 Segments with four blocks each. Blocks will be released every week on Tuesday at 8:00 AM EDT with a two week period in between each segment.
All levels of quilters are welcome. Block techniques will vary and include traditional piecing, paper piecing and applique.
The next block will be released on July 13th designed by April Adams of JANDABend Quilts.
I love the once in a blue moon in the pink evening sky! Always fun to see how fabric choices can change the feel of a block.

Thank you Chela!
I know tiny right? But they are sewn a little bigger making it easy to trim to size.
